Creating A Basic & Easily Stored Board Game

Today I'd like to share a little overview of how to make exciting board games for your classroom. I'll be discussing a standard size board game today, but the same procedures apply no matter how large the paper/posterboard that you use is!

Board games allow for exciting review activities that keep students engaged in what they are learning. I am a huge fan of board games! At the end of this post, I will include links to a few of my printable board game pages and templates to make things a little easier for time-strapped teachers.

Here's what we need:

  • Four pieces of heavyweight paper, such as cardstock paper.
  • Tape (Scotch tape works just fine)
  • Lamination
  • Board game templates or a good pair of scissors, paper, and whatever you can think of to create your board with.
  • Dice, or a spinner (see my tutorial on a variety of spinners here)
  • Game pieces, such as simple erasers or game markers/chips
Once you have your board created, you can let your imagination run wild with different game ideas for different subjects.

One smart idea would be to create a basic start-finish board and laminate it, leaving the spaces blank, so that you can adapt it whenever you would like using a dry or wet erase marker/pen. You can use different card sets or something similar to cover different subject areas. :)

Here's what we need to do for the board game:

Take your four pieces of paper and lay them face-down, forming a 2x2 square. Using a little bit of tape, attach the sheets to each other, leaving a tiny space in between each sheet. Leave one pair of sheets unattached.
